Indra Jatra

The biggest street festival in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, celebrated for eight days by Hindus and Buddhists to honor Lord Indra, the god of rain, and to mark the successful harvest and passage of souls into heaven. The festival begins with the erection of a ceremonial wooden pole (lingo), followed by elaborate rituals, masked dances, and chariot processions, most notably the living goddess Kumari.
